Blueberries are also native to North America and date back to the pre-colonial times. There are five different varieties of blueberries grown in the US: lowbush, northern highbush, southern highbush, rabbiteye, and half-high. Of these five the northern highbush are the most commonly grown throughout the world.
Northeast Native American tribes admired blueberries and much folklore developed around them and their many uses. The blossom end of the berry forms a perfect 5-point star and the elders of the tribe would tell how the Great Spirit sent these berries to relieve the children's hunger.
Parts of the blueberry plant were also used as medicines, the leaves were used for teas and and the juice was used to treat coughs.
